Our Adventures
Big Island. Big Dreams. Big Adventures.
We'd like to help you discover the Hawaii that we know and love. Hawaii Forest & Trail has nine different Nature Adventures that showcase our island's amazing diversity. Our journeys feature the best tour locales, great customer service, relaxed easy walks led by professionally trained Interpretive Guides who share with you the landscapes, legends and life of Hawaii.
We invite you to join us on one, or more, of our award-winning Nature Adventures. We guarantee that your time with Hawaii Forest & Trail will be highly rewarding and will give you a deeper appreciation of the natural wonders of our incredible Big Island.
Kohala Waterfalls Adventure Immerse yourself in Kohala. Come with us into the heart of the Hawaiian countryside to a place of old sugar plantations, ancient legends and extraordinary natural beauty. We cross two streams, discover seven waterfalls and traverse three bridges while exploring ancient farming terraces and the famous Kohala Ditch. Easy walks, gorgeous countryside views and a chance to cool off in a mountain stream make this the ideal family adventure.
Kilauea Volcano Adventure Experience the awesome spectacle of Pele's creation. There's not a better place to witness the timeless battle between the elemental forces of fire and water than at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. And there's no better way to explore the park than in the company of one of our Interpretive Guides. Let us share with you our passion and knowledge of the special places and stories that make Kilauea world renown.
Mauna Kea Summit & Stars Adventure Join us for a provocative journey through space and time. From sea level to the high alpine witness the dramatic diversity of our island's landscape. After a hot, picnic-style dinner we make our way to the summit of Hawaii's most sacred mountain for a sensational sunset amidst the largest collection of telescopes on earth. As daylight fades we descend to a lower elevation where your Interpretive Guide will reveal the wonders of our Hawaiian night skies.
Rainforest and Dryforest Birding Adventure Come along as we explore two rare habitats; the cloudmist kipuka rainforest on Mauna Loa and the sub-alpine dry forest of Puu Laau on Mauna Kea. Here are two places that represent Hawaii before human contact; places where plants and birds found nowhere else on earth reveal an evolutionary epic of the islands. Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness Hawaii's native birds and forests.
Hakalau Forest Wildlife Refuge Adventure Hakalau means "many perches." Named by Hawaiians long ago, it is still recognized as critical bird habitat. Once part of a large cattle ranch, it was the first National Wildlife refuge in the country established for forest birds and is home to some of the rarest plants, insects, and birds on earth. We access the Pua Akala tract (which is not open to the public) by special permit.
Kohala Wai PinzTrek Explore the hidden valleys and gulches on the northern tip of the Big Island in our rugged Pinzgauer vehicles. We ramble through a landscape of rushing streams, towering ocean cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. People have historically lived off the power of water here, from the terraced taro loi of Hawaiians to the irrigation ditches of the Kohala sugar plantations. We'll have time to stop and take a dip in a cool mountain waterfall pool.
Holoholo Hualalai PinzTrek Adventure Join us on a rocky climb up the cool and misty slopes of Hualalai volcano. Our Pinzgauers carry us from sea-level to 6,000 ft, and a surreal scene of lava flows and native Hawaiian forest. See the geologic forces that created our island at Kaupulehu Crater, the heart of Hualalai's last eruption. We'll visit magnificent coastal viewpoints and stunning lava formations, then explore a native forest and scramble through lava tube on foot.
Merriman's Culinary & Farm Adventuree Go behind the scenes of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Included in the itinerary is a trip to Kahua Ranch, devoted to cattle and sheep ranching, as well as innovative agricultural practices. Also scheduled is a stop at Honopua Farm, where organic vegetables, lavender and cut flowers are grown. We then return to award-winning Merriman's Restaurant in Waimea for a special four-course dinner prepared by chefs using fresh, local ingredients.
Private or Custom Adventures Combine the incredible diversity of the Big Island with Hawaii Forest & Trail's unsurpassed private property and permit access and you'll come up with the ultimate Hawaiian Adventure. Along with our regular adventure options we also have access to Lava Tubes for caving, as well as numerous locales for longer and more challenging hikes.
