Merritt has a B.S. degree in Wildlife Management and Biology from the University of Rhode Island. She also attended Wildlife Management school in Kenya and worked on sustainable agriculture programs in Costa Rica. After working as a zookeeper for a few years in Rhode Island she decided she wanted to work in the field more and accepted a job as a fire ant specialist in Kona in 2006. However, she missed working with people and is now very enthusiastic to combine her love of people and nature as an interpretive guide for Hawaii Forest and Trail.
