Overview
Hakalau Forest, named by Hawaiians for its “many perches,” is Hawaii’s most critical rainforest bird habitat. Our special use permit allows us access into the Puakala tract, a place with one of the highest concentrations of endemic forest birds in the Hawaiian Islands and not open to the general public. Whether you’re a casual or avid birdwatcher or just a lover of nature, this tour will leave you deeply enriched as you encounter some of the rarest birds and plants on earth.
Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge plays a crucial role in protecting Hawaii’s native birds through habitat restoration, invasive species control, and research and education initiatives. These efforts make it a vital component of bird conservation in the Hawaiian Islands. If you’d like to learn more visit The Friends of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge.
